In 1957, Josef Kuehn and his family immigrated to the United States from Germany. For several years thereafter, Josef and his son, Herbert, who had learned their trade in Germany, went to work for Josef's brother-in-law, Karl Wimmer, who had his own painting business. In 1960, Josef decided to go out on his own with his son, Herbert. They worked together until 1962, at which time Herbert and his family moved to California for two years, where their son, Jeff, was born in 1963. |
In 1964, when they returned to Detroit, Herbert joined the Local 37 Painters Union. Herbert's son, Jeff, worked during the summer vacations and learned the trade at an early age. They each passed down their specialized skills and trade to the next generation. In 1975, Herbert started his own company, M & K Painting, along with a partner and his father. Josef retired in 1985. |
In 1996, due to back surgery, Herbert was forced to take an early retirement, at which time Jeff took over the business and became President. On January 28, 1998, Jeff decided to change the name of the business to American Paint Systems, Inc. to encompass and expand the original vision of their company. |
